Madam, - Garry O'Reilly (July 9th) is right to point out that Mats Wilander should be added to the list of men to have won tennis grand slam tournaments on both clay and grass in the Open era.
However, Wilander is not the only omission from the list: Guillermo Vilas won the French Open on clay in 1977 and then the Australian Open on grass in both 1978 and 1979.
Incidentally, Kooyong (the Australian Open venue from 1972 until 1987) is in Melbourne, not Sydney as Mr O'Reilly said. This may seem a bit pedantic, but imagine the furore if one of your correspondents claimed Pairc Ui Caoimh or Thomond Park was in Dublin. - Yours, etc,
PAT DIGNAM, Marcus Beach, Queensland, Australia.
