Sir, Now that the 80th anniversary of the Easter Rising has passed I make a plea for a well deserved rest from reports of a commemorations of events involving armed conflict for the rest of the millennium. I don't think I could stand for any further pleading by columnists, their pens dripping in blood and sentiment, or the double think that sees no connection between the events of Easter Week and events in the North over the last 25 years.

And should some of your scribes persist in cultivating this green acre, annually, watering it with their tears let them do so, without the added insult of charging us with enslavement of minds for with a craven neo colonial mentality. Give some of us credit, for at last realising the danger of confining history to sublime, examples of heroism and martyrdom at the expense of those who served Ireland in humbler ways. Worst of all, we have the spectacle of one political party claiming the lion's share of the legacy of 1916 and exploiting the event for party political ends. Yours, etc.,

Boyle,

Co Roscommon.
