Madam, - Fintan Clancy (December 20th) sounds a bit dated with his Thatcherite defence of the rampant capitalist policies that Cllr Deirdre De Burca of the Green Party so soundly condemned. Thatcher preached that "individuals should be free to choose how to lead their lives free from unnecessary state interference" while her policies were creating "cardboard city" down the road. Tragically we are beginning to see the effect of the "greed is good" philosophy here at home.

Charlie McCreevy, aided and abetted by Mary Harney, is presiding over the biggest rich-poor divide in the EU. As the poor are driven further into grinding poverty so that the members of the golden circle can accumulate even more wealth, the spectre of homelessness is hanging over more and more of our citizens as house ownership is pushed further and further out of the reach of our young people. Cardboard cities are not too far away.

What we desperately need is necessary State intervention to create some level of equity. Alas, we have a heartless Government with a cardboard Taoiseach. More power to the Green Party for questioning the policies of the right. One hopes that they will begin a campaign to bring to the attention of the public the inequity and injustice of the present government policy and warn the public of what lies at the end of the "greed is good" road. - Yours, etc.,
