Madam, - There is no doubt that Tom Joyce (October 23rd) has tapped into something in the national psyche about the need to grow some of our own food.
Here in Carlow I have asked the local authority under the Acquisition of Land (Allotments) Act 1926 to acquire land to provide allotments for people in Carlow who would like to garden and reap the rewards of local food production.
In this era of high-density housing and little garden space, more and more people are clamouring to get back to producing their own food, albeit on a small scale.
Allotment would allow people to do just this.
I believe a resurgence in community well-being would spring from this initiative, apart from the joys of harvesting one's own produce.
I would encourage all local authorities to acquire land so that this wish to produce food locally can be rewarded. - Yours, etc,
Cllr MARY WHITE,
