Madam, - The other day I attended a conferral ceremony at UCC. The graduates were mainly doctors and dentists.
I was amazed to note the large number of this academically élite bunch who chewed gum throughout the ceremony, many open-mouthed, and at least one stretching the filthy substance on his tongue. It really was a horrible sight.
Has the depressing stage arrived when we have to be told to switch off our mobile phones and remove our chewing-gum? - Yours, etc.,
ANNE WALSH, Ballintemple, Cork.
