Madam, – Muiris Houston suggests that some recent research shows that the “State could save €80 million a year in health costs if alcohol consumption halved” (Home News, June 9th). There is no mention of the problem that such a reduction in alcohol consumption would lead to a fall of about €450 million in revenue from excise taxes on alcoholic beverages. – Yours, etc,
