Sir, – Recent references on this page to the pronunciation, correct or otherwise, of Rathmines and Rathgar brings to mind an exchange with the conductor on a 48A bus back in the 1950s.
When southbound on Milltown Road, the conductor, a Mr Byrne from Milltown Village, called out “Raumleh Park”.
I protested that it was not “Raumleh Park” but “Ramleh Park”.
Conductor Byrne responded, “No, it is not. On my bus it’s Raumleh Park”. – Yours, etc,
