Madam, - Mary Harney, leader of the Progressive Democrats, the party of Boston not Berlin, is concerned that Irish society is becoming greedy.
Am I missing something here? - Yours, etc.,

Madam, - In last Saturday's edition, Mary Harney is quoted as saying: "I genuinely believe we need to do more to encourage families to care for their loved ones." Given Ms Harney's championing of tax individualisation, clearly loved ones do not include children. - Yours, etc.,

Madam, - With regard to the remarks by the Tánaiste, Ms Harney, suggesting that people should contribute to the cost of keeping their elderly parents in retirement homes, why not allow citizens to continue in employment after the age of 65, and abolish completely the obligation to retire at any stated age?
I myself would hate to be obliged by law to retire while I am still in good health and with a possible life expectancy of another 20 years or so.
I can think of no more caring way to value the status of our senior citizens. - Yours, etc.,
