Sir, - Kevin Myers's Diary on our signposting, while amusing, did not address what I feel is very much the downside of our quaint but dangerously out-of-date location-finding system. I refer to the contribution of poor signposting to accidents, injury and death on our roads. The potential for rear-ending as a result of siting signs directly on junctions, instead of at a distance before the junctions, is enormous, particularly during the tourist season. It is my belief that insurance companies involved in assessing the blame in accidents should include the degree to which poor signposting has been responsible. This would ensure that local authorities, as well as car drivers would carry their fair share of culpability. Only then, when litigation digs a deep hole in the coffers of our county councils, will our antedeluvian signposting be replaced by a system on a par with our European neighbours. - Yours, etc.,
