Madam, - I was dismayed, on visiting the park in Merrion Square recently, to see that a number of the hedges and shrubs have been pruned (though "mangled" or "flailed" would better describe the result) using a mechanical hedge trimmer. Leaving aside the damage to the plants themselves, the appearance is dire; and given that there will hardly be much regrowth before next spring the effect will last for some time.

No doubt all the parks services are currently subject to shortages, but such treatment seems most unfortunate. This park is always maintained to a very high standard. It is near Leinster House and Government Buildings, and Ireland is soon to assume the presidency of the EU, when no doubt there will be more visitors than usual wishing to see it. - Yours, etc.,
