Sir, – I wish to thank you for Miriam Lord’s article on Kevin Heffernan (Front page, January 26th). Only people who were of our era in Dublin can appreciate the difference Heffo made to the relationship between the ordinary Dub and the GAA.
Heffo’s heroes drew myself and my sister and our friends to matches, wearing the Dublin blues. Prior to that my father brought us to Croke Park to shout for Clare, which was a pretty sad affair at that time. My younger sister and her pal became so obsessed that they used to watch the Dublin heroes training on Tuesdays. I had the pleasure of working with David Hickey – a fantastic man – years later.
As in many clubs around Dublin and other places, last Saturday morning in St Anne’s about 500 boys and girls from the age of four from Clontarf GAA were training in GAA football. Heffo’s influence lives on. – Yours, etc,
Sir, – I have sometimes been in tears of laughter at Miriam Lord’s writings on matters political, but there were tears of another sort in my eyes when I had finished reading her wonderful tribute to Kevin Heffernan (Front page, January 26th). She got it all exactly right. Thanks, Miriam. – Yours, etc,
