Sir, - The fact that Ireland is twice as expensive as some other EU countries (The Irish Times, July 22nd) comes as no surprise.

The advent of the euro makes such glaring differences more transparent than ever and the assertion by the chief executive of the Irish Tourist Industry Confederation (ITIC) that rising prices were "the result of living in a high-cost economy" lacks credibility.

If the Irish tourist industry wants to continue to compete in the European marketplace it will need to transform its pricing. - Yours, etc.,
