Madam, - Experts called in to investigate the extraordinary high number of accidents between Luas trams and cars (17 in the past six months) have discovered that almost all have involved a car running a red light.
According to the experts this pattern of collisions involving trams is "atypical" of similar systems abroad and has led Frank Allen, chief executive of the Railway Procurement Authority (RPA) to conclude that the statistics suggest there is a "serious issue" about the observance of red lights in this country.
Having witnessed many Irish drivers' blasé non-observance of traffic laws in general, I believe Mr Allen has drastically understated his case. - Yours, etc.,
EDWARD D. RAFFERTY, Millpark, Castlebridge, Co Wexford.
