Madam, - Geoff Power (February 13th) should really have checked his facts before citing Barcelona as an example of a successful low-rise, high-density city.
The limit imposed on the height of the buildings there means that house prices are on a par with Dublin's, despite salaries being considerably lower, leading to protests in the street by young people unable to buy a place of their own.
Similarly, the suburban sprawl around Dublin shows how ridiculous it is to attempt to preserve a "historic core" that in reality consists of decrepit, outdated and inefficient Georgian buildings.
They should go the way of the arc lamp and the penny farthing so that the centre of the city can be a place where sustainable numbers of people can live, work and play.
- Yours, etc,
DONAL QUINN, Athenry, Co Galway.
