Sir, – Further to "Rich drivers should pay heavier fines for speeding, says RSA" (December 7th), what an excellent idea. It is a system tried and tested here in Finland. Such fines could replace the helicopter, the Galway tent, the trophy spouse and the palatial pile in Dublin 4 as the mark of the truly successful gombeen. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – With regard to the “equality before the law” argument, what is equal about two people each paying an €80 fine, with one on €20,000 a year and struggling to survive, and one on €100,00 a year with plenty of surplus income? Or each of those paying a fine equivalent to 1 per cent of their income? That sounds far more like equality before the law to me.
And remember, one can always avoid a fine by not speeding! – Yours, etc,

Sir, – How long will it be before all drivers are obliged to have payslips and bank statements in their cars at all times? – Yours, etc,
