Hilary Heron and Mainie Jellett prize

Sir, – In your informative and extensive obituary on Thurloe Conolly ("Artist with links to 1940s Dublin avant-garde", 30th April) it is stated that he won the Mainie Jellett Scholarship in 1948, the only year it was awarded.

This is not correct, it was won by the sculptor Hilary Heron (1923-77) and Conolly was one of those highly commended along with artists Patrick Scott, Patrick Pye and Anne Yeats.

Incidentally Heron used her winnings to spend most of 1948 exploring art galleries in Europe travelling on her motorbike from Dublin.
