Sir, – I have to disagree with David Herman's view (Letters, May 4th) that landowners granting walkers access is "far from generally evident on the ground".
During a lifetime’s hillwalking I have never been prevented from crossing land by a farmer.
Quite the opposite in fact, as most will usually offer helpful suggestions on routes etc.
This has also generally been the experience of my hillwalking friends and colleagues.

Hopefully the ludicrous €40,000 award recently made by court to an injured walker walking the Wicklow Way will not affect the fine relationship that has long existed between walkers and farmers.
