Sir, - At the risk of being included with the "horde of semi-heretical modernists" in Michael Salter's letter (March 28th), I think it's a little sad that he should be so anxious to slam shut many of the windows opened by Vatican II. The Christian Church can be one body, but still retain its diversity, as the human body does.

Just because we didn't hear about them, doesn't mean that there weren't problems in the Church before the 1960s. Now, as then, we need to be open to the Holy Spirit and not get upset if He surprises us.

By the way, I wonder if the "ageing hippies in the clergy" really went away - or did their hair just get shorter? - Yours, etc.,
