Sir, - Tinnehinch, the home of Henry Grattan in Enniskerry, Co Wicklow, has recently come on the market. The house itself is in a poor condition but capable of restoration. The place could be a focus for a historical centre celebrating the life and times of Grattan and other contemporary figures. He is a significant person in the history of our nation and deserves to be marked.

The house is set on a sweep of the river Dargle only a mile from Enniskerry village. Grattan raised his family there, planting five myrtle trees along the walls to mark the births of his five daughters. He was for a time church warden at Powerscourt Church. This is where he was rooted. It would be a shame to see this historic site bought by a developer and turned into yet another luxury apartment block.

It is important that the State or the county council acts quickly to secure this historic site for the people of Ireland as the house is due to be auctioned on December 1st. - Yours, etc.,
