Sir, - Reading Robert MacCarthy's observations regarding Thoor Ballylee urges me to relate my own experience last Sunday afternoon, 30th June.

While most of Galway wound its way towards Salthill to view the Airshow, I carefully guided my spouse and three young children to the old back roads of the West of Ireland.us to discover our ancient roots. We ambled up by the old river through a wooded path. A beautiful place. Alas, reality, a ticket booth, complete with price list. Lets see, family, five pounds.

Refusing to pay, we could find no way to justify a fixed price to explore our past. I would like to know what has happened to the concept of voluntary contribution? It seems a more fitting form of seeking funds for maintenance. I might add we happened to be the only "Irish" people present, and disappointed ones at that! Yours, etc., Barna, Co Galway.
