Sir, - In his profile of the Taoiseach (Weekend, May 11th) Tom Humphreys got his clerical collars in a twist.

The part of Father Flanagan, founder of Boys' Town, was played by Spencer Tracy in the 1938 film of that name.

In 1944, Bing Crosby played Father O'Malley in the film Going My Way.

Both actors received best actor Oscars for their priestly portrayals, as did Barry Fitzgerald for best suporting actor in the latter film.

It would seem that the Academy had a soft spot for priestly roles in those days. - Yours, etc.,
