Home schooling and socialisation

Sir, – Breda O'Brien's piece (Opinion, August 15th) on home schooling raised some interesting points, but I was surprised to see her dismiss the socialisation opportunities of school as "sitting in a classroom with 30 people".

Surely, as a schoolteacher she has observed children in varying sized groups before school starts, between classes, at lunch and break times, in extra-curricular activities and many other times. Sometimes including teachers and sometimes excluding the child or children who are unpopular?

I would have thought it was part of a teacher’s duties to notice this socialisation or exclusion.
