HONORARY DOCTORATES

A chara, - Like Dermot S. Harte (May 15th), I am sceptical about honorary doctorates being conferred on footballers. Universities presumably consider that such awards are desirable for various reasons including funding, populism and prestige.

Degrees in law are not appropriate for sports personalities unless they study hard and pass the required rigorous examinations. Skill in football and other sports, however, could be regarded as an art or science. Honorary degrees in those disciplines would be more credible. - Is mise,
