Madam, - As we recall the service and sacrifice of the hundreds of thousands of Irish men and women who volunteered in two World Wars, might it not now be time for the Irish State to strike a special medal commemorating all who served?
This island has come a long way since Sean Lemass in 1966 first paid tribute to the Irish of the first World War. The present Taoiseach has also recognised their valour and heroism.
This year sees the 90th anniversary of the start of the first World War and next year marks the 60th anniversary of the end of the second World War in Europe. An ideal time for the State to say "Thank you" to those who survive, and to the families of those who have passed on. - Yours, etc.,
