Sir, - Billy Cotter (July 17th) and other readers may be interested to know that, as part of its public art programme, Waterford Corporation has commissioned the Cork sculptor Liam Lavery to create a simple but elegant bronze piece about 2.1 metres high to commemorate the birthplace of Noel Browne in Bath Street, Waterford.
It is planned that the sculpture and its proposed siting at the corner of Bath Street will be ready by the autumn, when I will be more than happy to show the finished work - or, indeed, any of the city's developing collection of contemporary public artworks - to Mr Cotter.
This may not satisfy his hope of finding in an Irish hospital some acknowledgement of Noel Browne's work. However, a start has been made - and where better than at his birthplace in Waterford? - Yours, etc.,
Derek Verso, Arts Officer, Waterford Corporation, The Mall, Waterford.
