Sir, - Your highly informative article (Features, October 17th) on Tom Crean reminds us again how quick we are to forget the heroic deeds of some of our own.
By any standards, Tom Crean of Annascaul, Co Kerry was an achiever of breathtaking proportions. His deeds in Antarctica should be known to every Irish schoolgoer and it is time surely that a statue of him was erected in a prominent place.
Why is it that we seem to lack pride in the accomplishments of fellow Irish people? - Yours, etc.,
John O'Shea, Richmond Avenue, Monkstown, Co Dublin.
