MICHAEL NOLAN,
Madam, - I read with interest Sorcha Crowley's article on Sam Maguire (Features, February 5th) and the official neglect of this great man by the State, the local authorities and indeed the GAA itself in refusing to preserve his homestead as a building of social, political, historical and sporting significance.
Officialdom in this State, whether at a national or local level, often seems happy to indulge itself in building monuments to nothing in particular, or worse still resurrecting monuments to our former British "masters".
The neglect of Sam Maguire stands in stark contrast to the shameful resurrection of a monument to Queen Victoria, complete with adorning gold Royal Crown, that is currently being put in place in Dún Laoghaire at a cost of €400,000. - Yours, etc.,
MICHAEL NOLAN, Elm Grove, Ballybrack, Co Dublin.
