Sir, – In reply to Michael Dervan's question ("The dark side of the concert hall", Arts & Ideas, July 17th), how about Charles Gounod, who said "I fight against the void, I think I've written something acceptable and then when I look at it again I find it execrable". Hardly Ave Maria, but maybe The Funeral March of a Marionette, which was used as the theme for the horror television series Alfred Hitchcock Presents? – Yours, etc,
