Madam, - Since The Irish Times began publishing its weekend magazine several years ago, I've always been fascinated by the small section known as "The Irish Times Index". Each week we are told "What's Hot" and "What's Cold" - often much to my amusement. I've wondered what social circles the writers move in and how old they are, as I myself, being quite young, often see things from a different perspective to theirs.

However, In the issue of November 27th I think they hit the nail on the head. Under "What's Cold", they have "lists". It strikes me that the "index" itself is a list. Under "What's Hot", they've introduced the buzz-word "foxymoron", a noun to describe one who is incredibly cute, but alas not at the races.

Could this noun be used to describe the compilers of the "The Irish Times Index"? - Yours, etc.,

IAN M. O'MARA,
