Madam, - Dr David McConnell's letter on biofuels (Nov 21st) does indeed indicate a looming ethical and moral issue for humanity.
Who will starve that others may drive? Surely those experts in the field, ethicists and theologians, should bend themselves to the task and clarify the dimensions of the dilemma for us laymen.
And surely the glamorisation of the internal combustion engine should stop. In the same edition you carry extensive and fulsome coverage of motor rallying, a "sport" that yearly indirectly causes the self-annihilation of would be rallyers in souped-up death traps. Then you have a 12-page motoring supplement dedicated to the gratification of the unhealthy relationship we have with these status symbols.
We look at Victorian newspapers and their promotion of opiates for teething babies with nostalgic superciliousness.
How will future generations regard our destructive predilection for the motor car? Superciliousness is to be hoped for. - Yours, etc,
