Sir, – Seán Donlon makes some highly sensible proposals to Sinn Féin to help “unlock unionist opposition”, (“Sinn Féin missing once in lifetime opportunity to set agenda”, August 1st). He says that ending the party’s abstentionist policy at Westminster would be a major step. However, calling the two states on this island by their proper descriptions would be a simple but important beginning.
Article 9.3 of the Constitution asserts “loyalty to the State” is a fundamental duty and it is given explicit expression by our “new citizens” at the annual inauguration ceremony. For Sinn Féin to ignore such recognition is petty, unhistorical and indeed, disloyal. Making the required changes in terminology would be a welcome new start. – Yours, etc,
JOHN A MURPHY,
Cork.
