Sir, – Roadworks expected to last approximately 12 weeks have commenced on the N18 between Shannon and Bunratty. Both sides of the busy dual carriageway are restricted to one lane.
On September 25th, along with thousands of other well-behaved motorists, I queued for approximately 20 minutes in the slow lane as the self-important people whizzed up the fast lane to the lane merge point. This sort of laissez-faire style lane management promotes road rage.
I have written to Clare County Council and the NRA suggesting they adopt a system I’ve seen used successfully on the Continent. On both sides of the road there are lots of signs stating, “Continue to use both lanes until merge point”. These are alternated with lots of signs saying “Slow, merge point in 800m”, then “600m”, etc. At the merge point itself there are signs with diagrams that state “Alternate access between lanes”. This works. It’s simple and it reduces road rage and stress.
Will they adopt the suggestion? I doubt it. – Yours, etc,
PETER GORMAN,
