Sir, – In relation to greenhouse gas reduction, Dr Roy Johnston (Letters, April 7th) makes a number of interesting suggestions: the revival of mixed farming, using natural fertilisers, co-ops, recycling, low car and home ownership, a network of towns rather than cities and (most controversially) professional motherhood of large families – presumably for economies of scale – with lots of childless relatives who, one supposes, would be valued members of the village community it takes to raise a child. Well, futuristic it may be but it sounds pretty much like the place I grew up in during the 1950s. Yours, etc,
