Madam, – It is with dismay that I read that senior executives of the HSE are to be awarded bonuses (Home News, October 14th).

This comes as a shock to the members of the Louth/Meath Branch of Down Syndrome Ireland. We were informed by the HSE in June that a much-needed grant of €10,000 that the HSE provided to the branch in 2008 was to be slashed by 50 per cent this year. The grant helps fund an Early Intervention Home Teacher Programme for 64 preschool children with Down syndrome. We now find ourselves in a situation were we may have to cut back this vital programme.

I urge Prof Drumm and his colleagues to decline their “bonuses”, so that maybe some these funds might trickle down to funding much-needed services for children with disabilities. – Yours, etc,

JOHN BROPHY,
