Human Face Of Homelessness

Sir, - It is obvious for anyone who cares to notice that the Celtic Tiger has not benefited all. Indeed, the victims of out high-octane economy are everywhere. Last Thursday I walked from Collins Barracks to TCD in the early morning. It had rained heavily all night and was still raining. As I passed St Paul's Church on Arran Quay there were four people asleep in blankets. At the Four Courts, another two. I crossed the river, passing through Temple Bar where, behind the Central Bank were another two huddled in a doorway. In two miles I had come across eight people without a home, without shelter for the previous night in atrocious weather. Is this the price we have to pay for the "outstanding" economy we are all "enjoying"?

It appears to me that the only people who are better off are those who were always better off. From my experience, those who are on middle, low or no incomes are not favoured in this Celtic jungle. - Yours etc.,

S. de Burca,
