Sir, - Bravo for publishing the most appalling photograph I have ever ever seen, that of the poor Colombian woman wearing a necklace bomb (May 22nd). Her nine-hour agony, before her head was blown off, should be a scream to echo round the world.
Colombia is a far-away country of which we know little. However, as a Christian people - indeed, as any kind of people - we should remember that the citizens of Colombia (and of many other strife-torn countries) are our neighbours in the global village. And how should we respond when we hear a neighbour undergoing such a ghastly ordeal? Scream.
Please, please, support human rights organisations. I make no apology for suggesting Amnesty International, but any action in this regard is better than none. We need to be shocked out of "our-I'm-all-right-Jack" apathy, and to remember that evil will triumph if good people do nothing. - Yours, etc.,
Henry Bacik, Secretary, Dundalk Group of Amnesty International, Ravensdale, Dundalk.
