Sir, – I thank Dr Fintan Sheerin for his frank and personal account of his experiences while working in the "Jungle" refugee camp in Calais (March 8th). It is important to be reminded of the personal stories behind the statistics and political negotiations we hear so much about.
I also commend the African women now living in Ireland who have the courage to speak out about about their "past horrors" and those who feel unable to do so (Susan McKay, "Rhetoric of support for traumatised war rape victims not matched by State action", March 8th).
I am saddened that our country seems to offer so little in the way of comfort and support to those in need of it living in Ireland. I am very thankful for the many people at home and abroad who willingly give of their time and expertise to make the world a better place. What would it be like without them? We each need to ask ourselves what we can do to alleviate the dreadful suffering that so many people have endured and continue to endure. – Yours, etc,
WINIFRED MURDOCH,
Rathfarnham, Dublin 14.
