Sir, – Jim O’Sullivan incorrectly states that Ibec recently called for the property tax to be doubled (July 10th). Prior to last year’s budget, Ibec suggested that a property tax would be less damaging to the economy than other tax increases. Ibec is in favour of low taxes, but when taxes are applied it should be done in a way that is least damaging to growth and job creation.
Last year the Government increased overall tax by €300 million more than it had set out in its own plans. This should be redressed in the upcoming budget.
The Irish economy is now taxed enough and property taxes, or any other taxes, should not be increased further. – Yours, etc,
FERGAL O’BRIEN,
