Madam, - The International Monetary Fund's suggestion of a property tax in Ireland (The Irish Times, November 7th) is hilariously stupid. In their well upholstered Parisian ivory tower, they don't realise it would take a very brave Irish politician to put this proposal to the electorate. As we don't have a brave Irish politician since Charlie McCreevy's exile to Brussels, the idea, as Charlie would say, is a non-runner.
I wonder if the world might not be a better place without the IMF. What does it do that's actually useful - apart from enriching the owners of Michelin starred restaurants and the shareholders of Mercedes Benz? But how to get rid of the damn thing? It's one of those international bureaucracies that just growed and growed like Topsy.
I say, close it down and nobody but Parisian landlords will miss it. - Yours, etc.,
JIM DUNNE, Margaret Place, Dublin 4.
