Madam, - Last week a Chinese man was sentenced to two months in jail by Dungloe District Court for failing to produce valid immigration documents ( The Irish Times, March 14th). The judge criticised the man for abusing his student visa. The Chinese man in question was working, paying taxes and not drawing welfare.

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach has been lobbying President Bush regarding the plight of the undocumented Irish in the US - many of whom overstayed visas, but work, pay taxes and are not drawing welfare.

The utter lack of compassion for foreign nationals in this country compared with the sympathy for the Irish in a similar situation in the United States is appalling. What hypocrisy. - Is mise,
