Sir, - It is obvious that at present decommissioning is not only an unrealistic demand but, on the basis that rearming is possible at any time, an artificial demand.
Have we lost sight of our main aim - i.e., the support and implementation of the Belfast Agreement? General John de Chastelain should request the "warring" parties to reaffirm this support at a ceremonial service where nationalist paramilitaries, loyalist paramilitaries, the RUC, and the British army could all hand over a nominal amount of arms. Let there be no unilateral gesture - no surrendering gesture - but a strong gesture of affiliation to proceed with implementing the Agreement. - Yours, etc., D. Morton,
Rathgar Road,
Dublin 6.
