CILLIAN DALY,
Sir, - Yet again I find myself being tarred with the same brush as every other 18 to 24-year-old. I take exception to Miriam Donohue's column (August 23rd).
She calls for a ban on people under 25 from driving powerful cars. I thought in this country, there was a thing known as consumer choice?
She also calls for a ban on them driving after a certain time at night. What of those that have to drive to work, due to distance, and a well-known lack of public transport? What if they work in shifts?
What if a group of friends decide to go to a pub on a Saturday night, and they do the sensible thing of having a designated driver? Do they have to head home before 10 p.m., because the driver is 23?
I thought that six years after having reached what is widely accepted as an adult age, none of these boarding school rules would be leveled at my age group. I was obviously wrong.
And as for Ms Donohue who admits to have been driving with a provisional licence for 13 years, and who has never applied for a test, I don't think she is in any position to suggest fully-licenced drivers, under 25, should not be allowed drive after 10 p.m.
It doesn't matter that she is "deeply ashamed" of her action, or inaction, or that she admits it was wrong, the fact remains that she did it, with apparently no regard for anybody else. I think she would better serve the public by keeping her opinions limited to the pages of the Pot And Kettle Monthly. - Yours, etc,
Rathmines,
