Sir, – Golfers across Ireland will feel a thrill and a quickening of the heart at the news they can resume play on April 26th. This thrill, however, may be somewhat tempered by the knowledge that, after such a long absence from the game, the swing will have stiffened, the clubs will have rusted, and the judgment of the pace of the greens will have declined from a lack of practice.
In order to overcome these little problems, I think the Golfing Union of Ireland should announce that all official handicaps will be increased by at least six shots and so allow players to maintain some form of dignity when next returning their signed scorecards. – Yours, etc,
