Sir, – Readers who mistook Lucy Kellaway's humorous irony (Business, August 12th) for the literal truth would be helped if The Irish Times printed potentially ambiguous passages in a distinctive typeface to alert the unwary.
Tom Driberg, a much misunderstood writer, proposed a new typeface based on italics with the slope reversed, to be called “ironics”, for this purpose.
Readers of The Irish Times would have their experience of the subtleties of the newspaper enhanced by the adoption of this measure. – Yours, etc,
Dr JOHN DOHERTY,
