Madam, - I'm sure that many of your male readers responded warmly to Marie Murray's article on men (Health Supplement, January 4th). I wonder if it was as well received by women. The lack of equal opportunity for women remains a significant issue and articles such as these may be unhelpful in the search for redress.
In our society girls are culturally conditioned to be appeasers and conciliators. It takes great personal courage to go against the grain and maintain an adversarial and challenging position, all the more so when valid concerns are ridiculed by clever columnists such as Kevin Myers. One could easily get the impression that strident women's libbers are to be found everywhere but I feel the reality is quite the opposite.
It is hard and largely unpopular to persist with this cause and my hat is off to those who do so. - Yours, etc.,
