Madam, - Driving home from work a short while ago, I was overtaken at high speed by a number of the so-called "boy racers" who plague our roads. I immediately called the Garda lo-call speeding number and received no answer. I then called the Garda confidential information number and again received no answer.

A phone call to the Garda station of the village I had just passed through brought the same result and the Garda station in the next village was not manned on this particular night.

Irritated by this, I went online to the Garda Ombudsman's office to make a complaint, only to discover that the website was not working properly.

I find it amazing that the road safety message is hammered into us from all angles, and yet when I, as a citizen with a social conscience, attempted to do my bit, there was not even an answering machine to take my call. What is the point of the constant campaigns and the warnings if there is no way for us to report reckless and selfish driving when we see it?
