Madam, - Once again Kevin Myers brings into focus the difficulties that seem to surround the enforcement of road safety laws (An Irishman's Diary, January 10th).
I live in Dublin 8, just 100 metres from the local Garda station, and 100 metres from the local public house. The sheer volume of the cars and company vans which park outside the pub each day from late afternoon to late at night is alarming.
I doubt very much that the drivers of these vehicles spend hours each day drinking coffee or tonic water, yet they are allowed to drive off, unquestioned and unhindered, night after night.
If this behaviour, and lack of response, is happening at one local pub, then surely it is happening all over the country. It is yet another example of the Garda's apparent unwillingness or inability to tackle a problem that is plain for all to see.
Over the next few days, how many "single-occupant vehicles" will "lose control", resulting in more serious injury or death? - Yours, etc,
DAVID O'NEILL, Dublin 8.
