Madam, - David O'Neill's assertion (January 14th) that gardaí are either unwilling or unable to act in relation to drinking and driving is a moot point. It seems to me that responsibility rests with the government. Successive governments have shown themselves to be in thrall to that most powerful of lobby groups, the drinks industry.
The fact that people such as David O'Neill and I support Kevin Myers's call for action (An Irishman's Diary, January 10th) is of little consequence to politicians who have recognised the electorate's apathy about the carnage caused by alcohol-assisted driving. - Yours, etc,
GREG SCANLON, Ballycasey Manor, Shannon, Co Clare.
