INCREASE IN MOTOR TAX

FERGUS O'CALLAGHAN,

FERGUS O'CALLAGHAN,

Madam, - Charlie McCreevy has showed an amazing lack of insight in his increase on car tax. We have to accept that these days almost everybody wants to own a car. But we should be discouraging everyday use of these cars, for traffic and environmental reasons.

Now that we're paying more in fixed costs for our cars, we're much more likely to use them. Why fork out even more money for public transport? A tax increase on petrol would have been a much more enlightened approach.- Yours etc.,
