Sir, – Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar's suggestion of linking welfare payments to inflation sounds reasonable until one remembers that wages are not always increased in line with inflation ("Social welfare to be linked to inflation under Varadkar plan", July 21st). Therefore the incentive to work will be reduced further as the gap between wages and welfare narrows further. – Yours, etc,
